Our Dream Come True!

Left to Right: Catherine White, Alexandra Mosher & Vanessa Daniel, with our 2018 Building & Interior Design Award

This is a really poignant moment in life for me.  On the heels of winning one of the most prestigious design awards in Bermuda, we closed the doors to our first boutique in the Washington Mall.  It’s a bittersweet feeling, moving on from the place I really gained traction as one of Bermuda’s new, authentic brands.

I’m the type of person who always looks forward with a mix of starry-eyed optimism and fierce tenacity, so looking back on the past 5 years in the Washington Mall, and all the milestones we’ve had there as we’ve grown, is a flood of emotion.  I have a full heart of gratitude for that chapter in our business, and for all the new friends we have made because we were there.

What I really want to share with you are the reasons why we made the move to Front Street, how we set up our dream store and studio, and who I have since become in this new environment.

Left to Right: Alexandra, her husband Darren and Gemma, our studio kitten

For years I had been searching for a space where we could bring together the store and studio environment, where our whole team, including Gemma, could be under one roof making and offering all of my collections.  In October 2016, we found that space.

I dove deep into unfamiliar design territory and called in my friends Vanessa Daniel and Catherine White to help me narrow four thousand ideas down into a workable plan.  Catherine and I worked on the retail experience, and Vanessa and I worked through the studio environment, taking into account all of the idiosyncrasies of the building, planning permissions and all the red tape things that make me crazy.  I had two binders full of ideas from the front mosaic and awnings, through to where the studio benches and machinery would be most efficient, and Vanessa and Catherine unjumbled it into a beautiful and practical plan.

Right: Nikki Inc Mosaics

A year ago today we were watching concrete be poured and drywall partitions go up. We were test-patching paint to find the perfect warm grey, and trying to figure out how to combat a very leaky front door.  We were reviewing lighting and electrical plans, designing the floating shelves, and ensuring the studio partition wall fit neatly adjacent to a bank of external windows.  Darren and I were barely holding it together, but our amazing team of staff, Vanessa and Catherine, all of our contractors and artisan contributors really got my vision and made beautiful things come together.

Our new Flagship Store & Studio on Front Street

Beyond the prestigious Front Street address and proximity to the ferry and Hamilton hotel guests, our space provides a show-and-tell experience for customers to really see that we hand make everything right on site in our Front Street studio.  I believe that people can feel how wonderful the space is - and that all of our staff love it too - and that happiness gets infused into our work.  Personally, I have never had a more efficient and inspiring studio space to carve beautiful things. I’m deeply happy and grateful to be in this space.  Also, our West Hamilton neighbourhood and retail friends are really amazing.

We would like to thank The Bermudian Magazine and the awesome judges for such a wonderful award! The full article will be available online here on or after April 15th, 2018.
